Ideas, Updates & Analysis

I am going to assume you know who Warren Buffett is.

BTW, he is not related to Jimmy Buffett.

They actually did the 23andme thing just to be 100% sure.

Back to WB.

He is the CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and is also known as the "Oracle Of Omaha".

Wouldn't it be cool to invest like a legendary investor?

Well how about knowing what stocks he invests in?

Check out Warren Buffett's Portfolio.

I am looking at BRK.B today.

As you can see from the 1 year chart, the stock price hit an all time high and has sold off quite a bit.

About 10%.

Now it is in a trading range with support around $190 and resistance at around $200.

It looks to me that this stock is going to bust through $200 and go up to the previous highs.

The price is in the middle of the trading range now, but this looks good to me.

It feels like I am getting in at a 10% discount.

This is yet another great Warren Buffet quote.

It's from the Chairman's Letter on February 28, 2002.

"After all, you only find out who is swimming naked when the tide goes out."

A related quote I like is "everyone looks like a genius in a bull market".

How long does a bull market last?

The average Bull Market period lasted 9.1 years.

How long does a bear market last?

The average Bear Market period lasted 1.4 years.

Using margin is a major investing mistake for most, if not all, investors.

Nowadays, brokers make it easy to open and use a margin account.

Margin allows an investor to borrow money to buy stocks.

Let's say you have $10,000 of cash in your account.

With a margin account, you have access to another $10,000.

So your total buying power is $20,000.

In other words, you can buy 1,000 shares of a stock priced at $19.50 per share.

1,000 shares x $19.50 = $19,500

The purchase used all $10,000 of your cash and $9,500 of your margin.

When you use margin, your broker collects a margin interest fee.

Also, I have yet to see any types of warnings when placing an order that will use margin.

It's like "Swim at your own risk."

Ok, the stock moves up by $5.

$19.50 + $5.00 = $24.50

1,000 shares * $24.50 = $24,500

You can sell at $24.50 and collect $24,500 minus commissions and margin interest.

$10,000 + $4,500 = $14,500

Your cash balance should be about $14,500 and your margin balance is reset to $14,500 to match your cash balance.

So your total buying power is now $29,000.

That is a nice $4,500 profit or 45% return and it would not have been possible to purchase the 1,000 shares without using margin.

The other scenario to look at is if the stock goes down by $5.

$19.50 - $5.00 = $14.50

1,000 shares * $14.50 = $14,500

You can sell at $14.50 and collect $14,500 minus commissions and margin interest.

The loss of $5 per share is $5,000.

This represents a 50% loss.

$10,000 - $5,000 = $5,000

Your cash balance should be about $5,000 and your margin balance would reset to $5,000 to match your cash balance.

What happens if the stock drops by $10 or more?

Margin Call

In the event of a margin call, the investor must either deposit more money in the account or sell some of the assets held in the account.

This was a great movie.

With all that said, don't use margin.

- Warren Buffett

"We simply attempt to be fearful when others are greedy and to be greedy only when others are fearful."

- Warren Buffett

"You do things when the opportunities come along. I've had periods in my life when I've had a bundle of ideas come along, and I've had long dry spells. If I get an idea next week, I'll do something. If not, I won't do a damn thing."

- Warren Buffett

"I bought a company in the mid-'90s called Dexter Shoe and paid $400 million for it. And it went to zero. And I gave about $400 million worth of Berkshire stock, which is probably now worth $400 billion. But I've made lots of dumb decisions. That's part of the game."

- Warren Buffett

"Risk comes from not knowing what you're doing."

- Warren Buffett

"I always knew I was going to be rich. I don't think I ever doubted it for a minute."

- Warren Buffett

"What we learn from history is that people don't learn from history."

- Warren Buffett

"It's better to hang out with people better than you. Pick out associates whose behavior is better than yours and you'll drift in that direction."

- Warren Buffett

"Long ago, Ben Graham taught me that 'Price is what you pay; value is what you get.' Whether we're talking about socks or stocks, I like buying quality merchandise when it is marked down."

- Warren Buffett

"It's never paid to bet against America. We come through things, but its not always a smooth ride."

- Warren Buffett

"The most important quality for an investor is temperament, not intellect. You need a temperament that neither derives great pleasure from being with the crowd or against the crowd."

- Warren Buffett

"I never attempt to make money on the stock market. I buy on the assumption that they could close the market the next day and not reopen it for five years."

- Warren Buffett

"The key to investing is not assessing how much an industry is going to affect society, or how much it will grow, but rather determining the competitive advantage of any given company and, above all, the durability of that advantage."
