Ideas, Updates & Analysis
On Friday, many of the Dow Transports were big percentage gainers.
Below is an article that explains why.
When I scanned these transportation stocks, I began to focus specifically on the 6 major airline stocks below.
Alaska Air (ALK)
American Airlines (AAL)
Delta Air Lines (DAL)
Southwest Airlines (LUV)
United Continental (UAL)
Obviously, each of these stocks may be set to benefit from lower oil prices especially moving into the summer season.
But which one should I buy?
Ideally, I want to buy a stock with a low p/e and a dividend.
JetBlue (JBLU) and United Continental (UAL) don't pay a dividend at this time.
The other thing I look at is the 1 year chart.
It is easy to quickly scan each of the 1 year charts on the Dow Transports page.
It becomes clear right away that only 1 of the airlines has a positive 1 year return (a green chart), while all the others have a negative 1 year return (a red chart) ranging from -6% to -28%.
There are many possible ways to look at this but I will look at just 2 ideas.
One idea is it to look at the most beaten up name which is Alaska Air (ALK).
It's the one that is down -28%.
Maybe this stock can go really move higher quicker than the others.
Another idea to look at the 1 airline stock that has had a positive return even with the higher oil prices over the past 12 months.
That stock is Delta Air Lines (DAL).
Maybe this stock can move even higher and be safer in the event oil prices rise again.
